Gikas A. Hardouvelis

Chairman of the BoD, National Bank of Greece and Professor Emeritus, University of Piraeus

Professor Emeritus in the Department of Banking and Financial Management of the University of Piraeus, Chairman of the BoD of the National Bank of Greece and Chairman of the Hellenic Bank Association. He served as Research Adviser & Senior Economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (1987-1993) and as an Adviser to the central Bank of Greece (1994-1995). In the private financial sector, he held key managerial positions at the National Bank of Greece (1996-2004) and Eurobank (2005-2014). In the public sector, he served as the Minister of Finance of the Hellenic Republic from June 2014 to January 2015, and twice as the Director of the Economic Office of the Greek Prime Minister from May 2000 to March 2004 and from November 2011 to May 2012. Prof. Hardouvelis holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley (1985), as well as a B.A. (Magna Cum Laude) and a M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University (both in 1978). He has taught at Barnard College of Columbia University and at Rutgers University. His academic research in Finance and Economics, frequently with him being the single author, is published in many top-ranking international journals and is widely cited.
