He studied at the LSE and the World Bank Development Institute. He began his banking career at ETEBA in 1964. He worked at the International Monetary Fund in Washington D.C. (1966-1973), from where he left with the rank of Head of the Southeast Asia Department. He served as General Manager of the Emporiki Bank Group (1979-1981). He worked as an independent Business Consultant and in 1988 he founded Alpha Finance together with Alpha Bank, where he remained as President and CEO until 2000. At the same time, he was an Executive Director of Alpha Bank and organizer and chairman of the Board of Directors of Banca Bucuresti, of the first private bank in Romania, which was renamed Alpha Bank Romania. He served as Chairman of Aegean Baltic Bank (2000-2004). In April 2004 he assumed the position of Chairman and CEO of OTE and the Chairmanship of Cosmote and Romtelecom, where he remained until November 2010. Since 2012 he has been a consultant to N.M. ROTHSCHILD. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors of SEV, IOBE, ELIAMEP and other organizations, as well as the Society for the Protection of Spastics.
