The benefits of energy upgrading of buildings and its contribution to the greek economy
The energy upgrade of buildings is a critical pillar of energy and climate policy. The planned investments in energy upgrading of buildings in the period 2025-2050 are estimated to contribute €961 million annually to GDP, while in terms of employment, the average annual contribution is estimated at 28,280 jobs. The policy for the energy upgrade of buildings should be supported by a predictable regulatory framework with clear implementation timetables. The effectiveness of the design and provision of subsidies and other incentives, as well as adequate funding are equally important. With a view to achieving national policy objectives for the energy efficiency of buildings, the study proposes, among other things, updating/revising the KENAK (National Energy Efficiency Code), offering flexible state programmes for individual financing of energy upgrades to building envelopes, strengthening skills and developing the workforce in the field of energy upgrading of buildings, as well as supporting innovation and smart technologies.
