Audiovisual Production in Greece: Trends, Economic Contribution and Growth Prospects

Τhe audiovisual sector as a whole and, more specifically, the production of audiovisual works excluding TV and radio broadcasting activities have recorded strong growth in Greece over the past decade. In the latter segment, both enterprise turnover and employment more than doubled over the period 2013–2024, reaching €745 million and 12.7 thousand employees, respectively, in 2024. The domestic digital games industry is also showing signs of growth, although it remains at a relatively early stage compared with other European countries.

Public funding, and particularly the cash rebate investment incentive, has played an important role in attracting investment and strengthening the domestic sector. From 2019 to mid-May 2026, more than €300 million in total funding was granted, with 81% relating exclusively to the cash rebate scheme.

However, the sector’s overall economic footprint is not limited to its direct activity. Firstly, the multiplier effects arising from demand generated in other sectors along the value chain, as well as from the income created by the sector, significantly increase its overall economic impact. At the same time, international film and series productions shot in Greece increase the visibility of domestic tourist destinations and contribute to the strengthening of domestic tourism. Specifically, econometric estimates suggest that a €1,000 increase in cash rebate expenditure for international film/series productions in a regional unit of Greece is associated with an increase in tourism expenditure ranging from €17.7 thousand to €24.6 thousand.
