The Building

IOBE is headquartered on Tsami Karatasou Street in Koukaki, in the greater Makrygianni area of the Municipality of Athens. The building was constructed in 1934 and is a characteristic example of Athenian Modernism architecture. Along with the adjacent ‘twin’ building, it is the work of architect Konstantinos V. Sgoutas (1897-1983), one of the most important architects of the interwar period. Urban residences make up a large part of his work, which also includes the Athens College in Psychiko, the ‘Venizelios School’ in Kaisariani, as well as office buildings, villas, and industrial complexes.

Initially used as a residence, it came into the ownership of IOBE in August 1991 through a donation by its founders, Dimitris Marinopoulos, Dimitris Kyriazis, and Spyridon Mantzavinos. Since then, after partial reconstruction into office space, it has served as the headquarters of IOBE, housing the Foundation’s scientific staff, administrative, and other services.

The Makrygianni area, at the foot of the Acropolis, was not chosen by chance by the founders of IOBE for its headquarters. It was a neighborhood of literary and cultural figures and is associated with significant historical and cultural elements of Athens’ identity, while its proximity to the city center and Syngrou Avenue made the area ideal for housing an outward-looking Foundation. Later, the Metro line allowed for easier access.

By decision of the Board of Directors in 2020 and the initiative of its late President, Odysseas Kyriakopoulos, IOBE proceeded with the project of building and digital upgrading of its headquarters with the aim of creating a functional, safe, digitally and energy-efficient modern workspace to ensure a high-quality work experience and facilitate hosting meetings, conferences, and events. The project was completed in the fall of 2024, thanks to significant donations and sponsorships from businesses, organizations, and individuals, following a major donation from Raycap and the late Kostas Apostolidis, a member of the Foundation’s Board of Directors. The overall management of the building upgrade project was graciously offered by DIMAND S.A.

IOBE expresses its deep gratitude to all the sponsors of the building upgrade for their support.

Special recognition is owed to the leading sponsors (Raycap, DIMAND, VIOHALCO Group, TITAN Group, Odysseas Kyriakopoulos, Panagiotis Laskaridis, Theofilos Priovolos, Metlen Energy, Papastratos S.A., Captain Vassilis & Carmen Constantakopoulos Foundation, LAMDA Development), the major sponsors (COSMOTE-TELECOM, Bespoke SGA Holdings – Spyros Theodoropoulos, George & Victoria Karelia Foundation, Quest Group, HELLENIQ ENERGY, EUROLIFE Group, NaviMax, Electra Management S.A., KLEEMANN, OPTIMA S.A.) as well as other important sponsors (Pyramis Metallurgy S.A., Octane S.A., Karatzas & Partners Law Firm, Fourlis Holdings S.A., PLAISIO COMPUTERS S.A., Abraham Tsoukalidis, Vitex S.A., LION & TURTLE S.A., Vassili Niadas, Chryssafidis S.A., BASF Hellas S.A., Panhellenic Association of Frozen Food Companies – PASEKT, Stefanos Capsaskis).

The new building, having retained its historical character, provides a high-quality space for employees and visitors, while contributing to the upgrade of the wider area.
