Why Europe struggles to manage the so-called "euro crisis”? Professor Martin Hellwig, the Director of the “Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods” will provide his own answer to the question, focusing on the role of the banking sustem, in a lecture which will be held on Tuesday, 6 May 2014, at 7 p.m. at the Athens Concert Hall “Megaron”, Nikos Skalkotas Conference Hall. Referring to the problems, challenges and prospects in the international banking system, Professor Martin Hellwig will also highlight the role of banking supervision and unification within the framework of the reform in EU governance as well as the fundamental political issues raised by this very discussion about the unification of the banking system. The distinguished researcher, an expert in the areas of Public Goods and Taxation, Financial Markets and Institutions, Competition and Monetary Theory, visits our country to participate in the lecture series: "Europe, The Economy and Growth," jointly organized with Megaron Plus and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, under the Greek Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Martin Hellwig is the Director of the Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods, as well as a Professor at the University of Bonn. His main research interests are in the areas of public goods and taxation, financial markets and financial institutions, competition and banking, and the foundations for macroeconomics and monetary theory. His past academic positions were at Stanford University, Princeton University, the University of Basel, Harvard University and the University of Mannheim. He is an Editor of the German Economic Review, Associate Editor of the Journal of Public Economics and member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Economics. He is also a member of many organizations and associations such as the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs, Centre for Economic Policy Research, Economic Advisory Group on Competition Policy of the European Commission. His work has been published in the American Economic Review, Econometrica, Review of Economic Studies and other top journals. His recent book “The Banker’s New Clothes: What’s wrong with banking and what to do about it”, co-authored with Anat Admati, received significant publicity as an important and interesting study on the problems, challenges and prospects for the banking system worldwide.
