Lecture of PHILIPPE AGHION, Professor of Economics at Harvard University “Growth, Innovation and the ‘Smart’ State”

Date: 24/06/2014

Lecture of PHILIPPE AGHION, Professor of Economics at Harvard University “Growth, Innovation and the ‘Smart’ State” JUNE 24, 2014, 19:00 Megaron - the Athens Concert Hall, Nikos Skalkotas Hall.

The lecture examines how the transition to an innovation-based economy affects the role of the State. The State can no longer be the old welfare State, nor should it be a minimal State restricted to insuring law and order. Instead, we need a "smart State" which accompanies and stimulates the creative destruction process associated with innovation-led growth. Several aspects of the “smart State” notion will be discussed: how the state should target and govern its investments? how should it conduct sectoral policies, if at all? how should the state insure against macroeconomic, unemployment and environmental risks? how can the state help reconcile growth with equity?
