The report, in the context of a collaboration between IOBE and the Regional Policy Observatory, aims to systematically monitor, highlight and interpret social and economic indicators across the regions of Greece. The report’s first issue focuses on the following themes: (a) demographics, (b) economic activity, (c) entrepreneurship, (d) financial sector, € labor market, (f) social services and inclusion, (g) culture and tourism, (h) environment and spatial planning.
Among the key findings, there are opportunities for progress and convergence in a number of areas. Indicatively: (a) Population decline and ageing reflect a national challenge, which are partly related to regional growth rates, while present lower intensity in specific regions, such as Crete and Southern Aegean. Births now fall short of deaths in all 13 regions. The trend is moderated by positive net migration flows in 10 regions. (b) Economic activity remains highly concentrated in Attica, which has by far the highest GDP per capita. Investment and credit expansion are recovering at different rates across regions; (c) The need for convergence between regions on key economic indicators remains a key objective and challenge, as the regions of the two largest urban centres and much of island Greece record higher levels of economic activity. (d) Heterogeneity between regions in key social indicators and divergence from the European average remains marked, such as in income inequality, health services and social protection.
