The Ιmpact of Golf on the Greek Economy

Category: Microeconomic Analysis
SubCategory: Tourism
Date: 25/11/2024

The main objective of this study is to highlight the benefits and the impact of golf on the Greek economy. The study describes the key facts and figures of the golf industry internationally and examines the development of golf in Greece. finally, this study quantifies direct, indirect and induced effects from the development of golf tourism in Greece in terms of GDP, employment and tax revenues. Golf's contribution to the Greek economy remains relatively limited. The total contribution to GDP from the operation of golf courses, as well as the broader impact on tourism, is estimated at €111.4 million. In terms of employment, the total impact is estimated at around 4,300 jobs. A comparison with other Mediterranean countries, such as Portugal and Spain, reveals significant potential for further development in Greece. While Greece currently has only nine operational golf courses, Portugal, a country of similar size, climate and population, has developed 113 golf courses. The further development of golf in Greece has the potential to offer significant benefits, but it also faces a number of challenges. In order to establish an area as a golf destination, it is necessary to have a critical mass of courses. In addition, there is a need for adequate infrastructure and good international links in order to transport visitors to the courses, not only during the summer months.
