The impact from the levy of an excise duty on natural gas consumption.

Category: Fiscal Policy
SubCategory: -
Date: 15/12/2011

The scope of the study was to examine the impact from the levy of an excise duty on natural gas consumption. We emphasised the place of natural gas in Greece’s fuel mix and energy strategy and outlined the taxation regime of energy products in Greece and EU. In order to examine the direct, indirect and induced effects of the imposition of the tax, we used an input-output model of the Greek economy, where we also examined the effects on the country’s competitiveness from the change in the relative product prices. Lastly, we examined alternative regimes of energy taxation, better aligned with the proposed tax reforms at EU level, that would raise similar tax revenue at lower social cost (in terms of total GDP and employment effects).
